![]() ![]() The 7 Deadly Sins (watch the movie "Seven" for more into the sins and Dante, mind will = blown) are just the tips of the iceberg in FMA and its rich tapestry of satire and allegory. He dies for his and his brother's sins, and is resurrected into the suit of armor, a purgatorial state for his soul. ~~Also, Alphonse's state can be read as an almost "Jesus" experience. Scar can be interpreted too as a holy warrior on a mission from God to free his people, e.g. They are a blend of Christian/Jewish history and ideals and Muslim philosophies, (IshbALAh, anyone?). The characters also often soliloquize about the meaning of life and war, the state of the afterlife, and other such deep thoughts. Look at some of the other similarities: In the first couple of episodes, the Elrics overthrow a corrupt priest who is manipulating the townsfolk (and attempting to play "God"), whom Envy later impersonates to fuel religious war in the town. ~~FMA is also VERY heavily influenced by Christian mythology which contributes to the widespread popularity of this awesome series. A LOT of his works are about him traveling through Christian mythology and interacting with the various figures in it. (This would be like you writing about YOU having adventures with Ed and Alphonse). You get +1 Hearts! + heart ~~Dante was a brilliant and imaginative 14th century poet, who ironically mostly wrote self-insert fan-fiction. ![]() ~~What's this?!?! Actual intelligent discussion on GAIA!?!? (Over a year old but whatever.) This was a really nice surprise as about 90% of posts in this guild are something like "LOL I wuv alfonz!!!!" Very nice job seeking knowledge through discussion and research and reporting your findings to fellow interested parties. Basically, this is a theory XD My other shorter, easier theory is that the humunculi are named after the seven deadly sins because those fit perfectly ~ just wanted to let you guys know my opinion on this ^0^ So, because I don't feel like typing all of that again, I've underlined the ones that are the names of some of the homunculi :3 And of course, Dante. The 9 sins include:: incontinence, lust, gluttony, avarice (greed), wrath, heresy, various forms of violence (blasphemy, usurer, sodomite, suicide, etc), fraud, and being a traitor. The first 5 circles are for the self-indulgent sins, 6-7 for the violent sins, and 8-9 for the malicious sins. And of course, as we all know, the homunculi are referred to the alchemist's sin. There he goes through 9 circles of hell, each one pertaining to a specific sin. In this part of the poem, Dante is guided by Viril, who's a Roman poet. The part that's related to FMA is the Inferno, which as I kind of mentioned before is largely the medieval timeframe's concept of hell. The poem is written in the first person, and is about Dante's journey through the three realms of the dead-lasting from the night before Good Friday to the Wednesday after Easter in the spring of 1300. There are 3 parts to the poem-Inferno (hell), Purgatorio (purgatory), and Paradiso (paradise). It's about the poet's vision of the Christian afterlife, but from someone's standpoint that lived in the medieval timeframe. If you aren't familiar with it, The Divine Comedy is a poem written by Dante Alighieri (he was Italian) sometime between 13 (which is when he died). (c'mon now, we all know they do xD) When I told them to him, he said that those were the 'sins' that are in Dante's Inferno, part of the Divine Comedy. I was talking to my dad about FMA, and mentioned how the antagonists (aka da evil peeps) have really weird, and kinda stupid names. ![]()
